The Speak Up Alexandra Self Advocacy Group meets monthly on a Monday afternoon between 3:30 – 4:30pm.
The ‘Speak Up Alexandra’ Self Advocacy Group was formed to empower people with disabilities and their families and carers. Self-Advocacy Groups are run by people with disabilities to assist individuals to understand their rights and responsibilities. Self-Advocacy Groups support individuals to have the confidence to make decisions and choices about their lives and to have the same opportunities as other members of the community.
The group has worked actively to support members to speak up and have a voice within their community. The groups meet on a monthly basis, while also attending conferences, training opportunities and running events during the year to raise awareness of Self Advocacy. They also work to improve services and educate the community. Examples of work includes representatives meeting with high level bureaucrats in DHHS, providing information to businesses about access issues, holding their own radio segment, running events including self-advocacy film day; Dangerous Deeds Exhibition.
